The Minnesota Historical Society's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War features items from our collections, special events, educational resources and more.

The First Infantry Regiment of Minnesota Militia was renumbered the Thirteenth Minnesota U.S. Infantry Regiment when it was enlisted to fight in the Spanish-American War. See it at the Minnesota State Capitol.

Organized in fall 1861, the First Battery, Minnesota Light Artillery was initially outfitted with two 12-pounder howitzers and four brass rifled guns that were later exchanged for three-inch Rodman rifled guns. See it at the Minnesota State Capitol.

Organized late in the summer of 1862, the Tenth Minnesota had a career that included service in the U.S. -Dakota War before going south to join other Minnesota regiments in the battles of Tupelo, Nashville, and in the New Orleans-Mobile-Montgomery Expedition. "Minnesota in the Civil War" by Kenneth Carley. A lavishly illustrated, richly detailed book presents a comprehensive picture of Minnesota’s involvement in the Civil War.
Although the American Civil War was not fought directly on Minnesota soil, we did play an important role. The Civil War Daybook follows Minnesota’s role in the War and on the home front day-by-day.
