New Catalog in 2019

The Minnesota Historical Society’s Library and Archives catalog has a fresh, new look!

Through our partnership with the Minnesota Program for Automated Library Systems (PALS), the Gale Family Library is updating our integrated library system. The new catalog debuted January 29, 2019 and provides the same information and access to MNHS collections, with many new functions.
Highlights of this change include:
  • A new, updated library catalog that will work on mobile devices
  • Ability to link directly to library records
  • Ability for researchers to save and export library records
  • Support for searching many open access or public domain materials available through other special libraries and collections (such as the Library of Congress digital collections)
Please note the catalog update does not include, or other searches available on the Minnesota Historical Society sites.

Library and Archives Catalog Help Documentation:

  • Quickstart Guide: This short guide covers selecting your search scope, search terms, and narrowing your results using filters, as well as finding materials listed in the catalog and saving your search results.
  • Log-In and Password Change Details: Some features of the new catalog--including saving your search results--require you to be signed-in to function properly. Learn how to sign-in and how to change to a secure password with this color-illustrated, step-by-step guide.

Q: Why is this happening?

The Minnesota Historical Society is a member of the Minnesota Program for Automated Library Systems (MNPALS), which is a consortium of libraries in Minnesota (like MNSCU libraries and other state government libraries) who share an integrated library system (the software that creates our publicly searchable catalog). MNPALS decided to upgrade our shared catalog to bring it in line with modern libraries and research practices.

Q: How can I get help or give feedback on the transition to the new system?

MNHS will continue to improve the new catalog after its January release. We welcome your feedback about the new system via the feedback link in the top navigation bar of the Library and Archives Catalog. Please watch the Library’s website and Facebook page for updates or to share your comments, and you can always contact us via phone (651-259-3300) or email for assistance.

Q: How did MNHS test the new catalog before it went live?

Staff has been working on the new catalog for many months and they made a number of changes based on user feeback.  Most recently, a beta version of the new catalog was available to researchers in December 2018. Many thanks to everyone who tried it out early and sent in feedback!

Q: Will there be any opportunities to learn more about using the catalog?

Yes!  Public training and instruction materials will be shared via links on this page as well as on our Facebook page. You can also ask at the Reference Desk--or contact us via email or phone--for one-on-one assistance.
