Field Trips

Jeffers Petroglyphs is home to roughly 5,000 sacred rock carvings made by the ancestors of today’s American Indians. Programs incorporate history, anthropology, archaeology, and biology, connecting students with those who traveled our continent in ancient times.

All field trips include a video orientation, atlatl program, prairie walk, and tour of the carvings. Teachers choose one of the following lessons. Optional activities are also available.

Field Trip Options

Exploring Culture Through Picture Writing

Students learn about life on the prairie through hands-on exploration of items that American Indians used in daily life and packed on a travois (drag sled) for travel. Students also discover how American Indians kept track of history by recording symbols on hides called “winter counts.”

Explore how American Indians used technological innovations to adapt to an ever-changing climate through 7,000 years of time.
